We see a lot of patients who come to us with a chipped tooth or two and while most of them want them repaired for cosmetic reasons, we know that a lot of patients choose not to come in.
It's important for you to know why you should come see us any time you have a chipped or damaged tooth. Most of the time, we will recommend that you have the chip repaired, even if it's in the back or not visible. Good oral health is not just about appearances, it's about proper care of those pearly whites!
Why Treatment is Necessary
While chipping a tooth may not seem as serious as losing a tooth, it is equally as significant. Depending on how deep the chip is will depend on the treatment required to repair it. A deep chip can not only affect the function of your tooth, it can damage the nerve on the inside of the tooth.
This leads to discoloration, pain and even the death of your tooth. Once that occurs, a root canal will be required to save the tooth, and although it's a necessary and relatively simple procedure, we'd like to help you avoid that by treating the tooth early.
With minor chips we treat them with dental bonding, which is applied directly to the tooth and shaped by one of our dentists. We take great care to make sure that the bonding matches the rest of your teeth in color and appearance. Another treatment we offer is a veneer, which is more of a cosmetic repair. After the chip tooth is repaired, we can fit a veneer over the front of your tooth.
If you've chipped a tooth through an injury, an exam is recommended to check for additional damage to your surrounding teeth and jaw. We hope you never need a chipped tooth repaired, but if you do, give us a call and learn more about how it can be treated.
