Simple Tooth Extractions in Schaumburg, IL

The average human being will grow on average fifty-two teeth from childhood to adulthood. No matter how hard we try to maintain healthy teeth, it is more than likely that at some point you will require a tooth extraction in your lifetime.

Of course, at ImplantWide we do everything we can to save or repair your tooth before resorting to removal. However, if you are in need of an extraction then here are few things to know.

Surgical Extraction vs Simple Extraction

There are two types of tooth removals otherwise known as extractions: Surgical and Simple. Most extractions tend to be simple. Of course, not as simple as wrapping one end of string around the tooth and attaching the other end to a doorknob. While old wives tales might swear up and down by this method, here at ImplantWide we prefer a safer and more sterile procedure.

In simple extractions, after careful examination, [[[ClientEx:DocName1]]] will first loosen the tooth from its socket with an instrument known as an elevator. Then [[[ClientEx:DocName1]]] will use forceps to wiggle the tooth back and forth so that it can then be pulled free. Typically, this procedure is done under local anesthetic and is painless.

Surgical extractions are much more complicated and involve an incision into the gums. It should be noted that sometimes simple extractions can turn into surgical extractions when the tooth fractures or cannot be extricated without surgery.

You Might Need A Tooth Extraction When

•  A tooth is significantly damaged from trauma or Periodontal disease
•  Wisdom teeth-either come in crooked or are not fully erupted
•  A tooth exhibits extensive decay or infection
•  You have extra teeth
•  A tooth is incorrectly positioned or impacted
•  A baby tooth has not fallen out to allow for a permanent tooth to come in

It should also be noted that some cancer drugs and treatments, which negatively impact the immune system can result in infection and thus tooth extraction may become necessary. Also, individuals who are undergoing head and neck radiation therapy many need to have a tooth extraction to remove the teeth from the field of radiation.

What to Expect After an Extraction

When you leave our office after the procedure, you will be provided with a set of aftercare instructions that which will be designed specifically for you. Some common issues you may experience after your appointment might include:
•  Bleeding for up to 12 hours after the procedure
•  Swelling
•  An oozing pink fluid from the gums for the next few days
•  Minimal pain

For a simple extraction, the pain you may experience should dissipate after a few days and should be manageable with over the counter analgesics such as Tylenol, Aspirin or Aleve. If you experience severe pain or symptoms, please call us to determine whether you need further attention.

We also suggest that after the procedure you rinse your mouth out with warm salt water at least twice a day for about one minute for the next three to four days. This practice is known to reduce bacteria, minimizing your chance of infection and speeding up your recovery process. You should do your best to avoid the extraction site, eat soft foods, avoid hot or spicy dishes and for the first 24 hours, and avoid vigorous rinsing.
