Surgical Tooth Removal in Schaumburg, IL

At ImplantWide we understand that losing a tooth can be difficult, not just physically but also emotionally. The removal of a tooth otherwise known as a tooth extraction is never ideal. [[[ClientEx:Docname1]]] and[[ClientEx:Docname2]]] will do everything they can to avoid this outcome. There are many different reasons why an extraction may become necessary, many of which may be out of your control. In either case, it is best to address the problem sooner than later.

Simple Extraction vs Surgical Extraction

The first thing you need to know is that there are two different types of extractions.

A Simple Extraction is a relatively straightforward procedure and can be achieved by simply loosing the tooth with an instrument referred to as an elevator and the pulling it from the patient’s socket with forceps.

A Surgical Extraction which are sometimes referred to as open extractions are a little more complicated and requires an incision into the gum. Sometimes, simple extractions turn into surgical extractions when a tooth shatters or is impacted. The most well-known example of this kind of extraction is the removal of wisdom teeth.

Preparing For Your Appointment

After you have scheduled an appointment with us, we will take x-rays to help determine the best course of action. If a surgical extraction is required, we will schedule an appointment and provide you with pre-surgery instructions, which you will need to review.

It is important that before you arrive that you make sure to provide us with an accurate and up to date medical history. You should notify us if you have any heart conditions, are on any medications or have a compromised immune system. We also recommend wearing comfortable clothes, little to no makeup, and leaving jewelry at home. If you are going to be administered IV sedation, make sure you have someone to drive you home after the procedure. Driving yourself home after sedation is not an option.

You should also review your aftercare instructions so as to make sure you have all that you might need for after your operation. For example soft foods, icepacks, lots of liquids and over-the-counter analgesics.

What to Expect From the Extraction Procedure

At we try to make each operation as easy as possible. Although, each patient is different, here are just a few tenants of the operation.
1.  Anesthesia
2.  Typically, we will inject you with local anesthetic and apply a topical numbing agent.
3.  Surgical Flap
4.  An incision will be made to into the gum tissue to expose the tooth.
5.  Periodontal Ligaments
6.  We will carefully extricate the tooth from the periodontal ligaments that keep it secure. In cases, of bony impaction, we may have to remove a little bit of bone.
7.  Safety Net
8.  To avoid an accidental swallowing of the tooth, gauze might be placed in the back of the mouth.
9.  Sectioning
10.  Next the tooth is separated into several pieces so as to minimize trauma.
11.  Elevation
12.  We then use an elevator to full lift the tooth out of its socket.
13.  Minimizing Bleeding
14.  After the tooth is removed, we work to minimize the bleeding.
15.  Following Post-Operative Instructions
16.  After returning home make sure to follow the provided instructions. Be vigilant about your symptoms. If you have excessive pain or bleeding or anything else seems out of the ordinary contact us immediately.
