How a Dental Bridge Gets Affixed to Your Teeth

Posted on 7/10/2018 by Dr. Chapko
How a Dental Bridge Gets Affixed to Your TeethOne way of replacing a tooth that's missing from your mouth is with a bridge. This time-tested treatment is highly effective in restoring your mouth's form, function, and health.

There are two types of dental bridges you can get today: fixed and implant-supported. Each of these procedures is conducted differently.

How Fixed Dental Bridges are Affixed to Your Teeth

An affixed dental bridge goes between one to three of your teeth. It's held there in place with dental crowns that are attached to your natural teeth. Once there you'll look like you have a complete smile again.

This only works if the teeth that this bridge is affixed to is strong and healthy enough to support your crowns. They'll need to be filed down to accommodate the crowns before they can be placed there.

How Implant-Supported Dental Bridges are Affixed to Your Teeth

Implant-supported dental bridges are different than fixed dental bridges because they don't need any support from your natural teeth.

Instead, they're attached to dental implants: tiny titanium posts surgically embedded in your jawbone. Your body doesn't recognize this as a foreign material so the implants can fuse with your jawbone.

Once this happens the dental bridge can be secured to the implants making this an exceptionally strong and durable option. It also stops the degradation of the supporting gum and bone tissues that starts when you lose teeth. However, this is a costly procedure, but it will pay off over time.

When you know you're in need of a dental bridge, give us a call so we can set up an appointment to discuss your options with you. Understanding how both types of dental bridges work should help to put your mind at ease. It's just a matter of finding time to work with our office to complete the procedure.
