![]() Toothpaste helps to keep your teeth clean and freshens the breath, but it is important that you are using the right amount each time that you brush. Toothpaste for AdultsWhen preparing their toothbrush, most adults will cover the whole brushing surface with toothpaste, just like they do on TV. This is far too much toothpaste to use in one session. In fact, you really only need about a pea-sized drop to properly clean your teeth.Too much toothpaste can actually hinder your teeth at times. Some toothpaste contains abrasives that might be too much if used in excess. The results could be gum recession or loss of tooth structure, but these are just in the most extreme cases. Toothpaste for ChildrenWhen it comes to children, you need to be even more diligent about using the right amount of toothpaste. For infants, never use more than a thin streak of paste. For older children above the age of five, cut the recommended dosage in half – so the equivalent of half of a pea.Using the right amount of toothpaste will ensure that your child doesn't get any excess fluoride, which is common among kids who use too much toothpaste. Unfortunately, a condition known as fluorosis could occur with too much fluoride in the system, which is marked by mottled, stained teeth.
