Why Can't You Brush after Eating or Drinking Something Acidic?
Posted on 9/21/2020 by Dr. Joshi
Sometimes, you can brush too soon after you eat. This is especially true if what you've eaten or drank had a high acid content. You don't want to brush right away, as brushing can damage your teeth. In the interim, it is better to drink water or use it to rinse your mouth.
What Foods or Drinks are Acidic and Will Soften the Enamel?
You should not brush right after drinking any type of wine, as all wine softens the enamel. Fruit juices, such as cranberry juice or orange juice, soften enamel as does candy and sugar. Brushing the teeth right after you consume acidic foods will do more harm than good. If you don't want to erode your enamel, you should wait an hour before you brush. When dental enamel becomes eroded or wears away, you can experience tooth sensitivity, cracks, tooth decay, and discoloration. As the enamel wears down, it exposes the dentin, which leads to discoloration.
How Can I Reduce the Effects of Acidic Foods?
Besides waiting to brush your teeth, you need to eat acidic foods during meals. Doing so will help neutralize the acid. Dilute the acid in your mouth by drinking water as well. You can also reduce acid contact by using a straw. Drink no-sugar or low-sugar drinks or consider options, such as coconut water or herbal tea. Eating acidic foods may wear down the enamel, but you don't have to worry, as long as you practice preventative measures to reduce an acidic response.
