Toothpaste is an important product in our daily lives as it ensures the protection of our teeth. It is comprised of important substances, such as fluoride and calcium, that protect our teeth from tooth decay and remove plaque from tooth enamel. To ensure that toothpaste can do its job, it is important to make sure enough toothpaste is being used. Too little and you risk spreading the toothpaste too thinly across the oral cavity, and possibly neglecting protection for the teeth further back in the mouth.
What is the Ideal Amount of Toothpaste?
The ideal amount of toothpaste is a pea-sized dollop on the brush. This will give the teeth enough of the essential ingredients in toothpaste to protect them for the day and remove any plaque that may have built up. For children, and adults over the age of 55, less toothpaste needs to be used, a smidgen, as their teeth are more sensitive to fluoride than an adult's. A child's oral cavity is still growing and therefore more sensitive. If you have a child, let them use toothpaste suitable for children until they are a teenager. These toothpastes have a reduced amount of fluoride and are therefore safer for children.
Can You Use Too Much Toothpaste?
Toothpaste is a very safe product and you should not be worried about using too much if you stick to the general rule of using a pea-sized amount. However, using too much is possible if you consistently use larger amounts than the recommended, especially for children. As children's teeth are more susceptible to damage from fluoride than adult's, using too much toothpaste is possible. This is why it is important for them to use children's toothpaste, as overusing it is less likely. If you are worried about your child overusing toothpaste, check how much they put on before brushing. To learn more about how to improve your oral hygiene routine, contact our office.
