You Need to Reach Out to Us If You Get a Loose Tooth as an Adult
Posted on 12/7/2020 by Dr. Joshi
Permanent teeth should never feel like they are coming loose. Obviously, an injury can cause an adult tooth to come out of its socket or even fall out of your gums completely. But if one of your permanent teeth begins to feel loose seemingly for no reason, you need to reach out to our office immediately, as this could indicate a serious dental problem.
Causes of a Loose Adult Tooth
Besides an injury like a fall or a blow to the face, other causes of a permanent tooth coming loose include gum disease, osteoporosis, and teeth grinding. Gum disease can be reversed in its earliest stages, but advanced gum disease is severe and can lead to jawbone deterioration and tooth loss. With advanced gum disease, the infection spreads through your gums to the roots of your teeth and even to your jaw, weakening the bone and causing your teeth to loosen. Similarly, osteoporosis (a disease that weakens the bones) can also affect your jawbone and cause your teeth to come loose.
Treatment Options For a Loose Tooth
How we treat your loose tooth depends on its cause. It is important that you schedule an appointment to see us as soon as possible so we can perform a full oral examination, determine why your permanent tooth feels loose, and prevent further problems from occurring. If your tooth came loose as the result of an injury, we will consult with you about reconstructive options such as tooth splinting, crowns, or dental bridges. If tooth grinding caused your tooth to loosen, we will prescribe the use of a mouth guard. Finally, for patients with severe gum disease, treatment options include root canal procedures, scaling and root planing, antibiotic use, and gum or tissue graft surgery. If one of your adult teeth feels loose, contact our office right away.
