How Does a Sticky Food Lead to Tooth Damage?If you eat a caramel or other sticky treat, you can also damage your tooth. Therefore, it is best to find a food that is less sticky to satisfy a sweet tooth or craving for a snack. The following information will help you avoid foods that can stick to the teeth and cause tooth damage and a more serious dental complaint.

What Sticky Foods Should You Avoid?

If you want to prevent problems with dental decay or loose fillings, you have to stay away from certain sticky foods or treats. For example, many of our patients think that eating dried fruits are healthy. However, it is better to stick to fresh fruits, as dried fruits tend to stick to and between the teeth and cause cavities. The sugar-loaded, fruits along with trail mixes containing raisin and granola, can wreak havoc on the health of your gums and teeth. You also want to stay away from taffy or caramels for obvious reasons. Both these candies can easily pull out a filling or restoration, so you should avoid eating or chewing them.

Other Foods that Become Sticky When You Chew Them

Besides foods that easily stick to the teeth, you also have to be careful about eating certain carbs, such as potato chips or bread, both which can stick to the teeth and cause cavities. If you add a sticky spread, such as marshmallow or peanut butter, you can do even further damage. Other sticky foods that should be avoided include gummy bears and gummy worms, beef jerky, toffee, Skittles, fruit roll-ups, Snickers, and chewy granola bars.

Not only do chewy foods lead to dental damage, they can also cause jaw soreness and pain. If you have some teeth that have been damaged by sticky treats or hard candies, call us immediately. Take care of the problem before it becomes a more serious complaint.
