Using Vegetables for Snacks Could Leave Your Oral Health Better Off
Posted on 2/22/2021 by Dr. Joshi
If you are looking for a great snack that will not damage your teeth or gums, you need to pick up some vegetables. Carrots, celery, broccoli, and other vegetables you can eat without cooking them make for excellent snacks throughout the day, and unlike sugary treats or other unhealthy foods, they can actually improve your oral health.
Vegetables Help Clean Your Teeth
Raw vegetables can help remove bacteria, plaque, and food debris from your teeth. That is because they are very crisp and work like a brush on your teeth. They scrub off anything stuck there. They are also fairly neutral foods in terms of acidity, so they help bring your mouth back to a neutral pH state.
Vegetables Contain Water
Another benefit to eating raw vegetables is that they contain water. This will help wash bacteria and food debris out of your mouth. While your saliva does this, drinking water and eating foods with a high water content help keep your mouth even cleaner. If you suffer from dry mouth, eating vegetables is especially helpful since your mouth does not produce enough saliva.
You Get More Vitamins for Your Teeth
Vegetables contain iron, calcium, vitamin C, and other essential vitamins and minerals. Your mouth needs these vitamins to keep your gums and teeth healthy. If you are deficient in certain minerals or vitamins, you will be more at risk for certain illnesses or more likely to damage your teeth.
Vegetables Are Not a Replacement for Good Oral Care
While vegetables can do a lot for your oral health, remember that they are not a replacement for brushing twice a day or flossing daily. Also, you should not skip coming to see us every six months just because you eat a lot of vegetables. Please call us today to make a six-month checkup appointment if you have not had one recently.
