Chronic Dry Mouth Could Result in Your Having a Rapid Increase in CavitiesIf you have a condition called xerostomia, you need to find out how to alleviate the condition. Xerostomia is the technical term for dry mouth. A dry mouth is not good, as you need saliva to keep your mouth moist to cleanse your teeth naturally. Otherwise, you can experience a significant increase in cavities—the following information details why this happens.

What Is Chronic Dry Mouth and How Does It Occur?

According to researchers at the University of Michigan, xerostomia, or dry mouth, can make it difficult for a person to talk, eat, or swallow. Ongoing or chronic dry mouth can cause gum disease, cavities, and mouth infections. One of the causes of dry mouth is dehydration, which can be alleviated by drinking about eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day. Other reasons for dry mouth include stress, smoking, or problems connected with salivary gland functioning. Moreover, reduced saliva production is common as people age. Radiation treatments involving the head and neck or auto-immune disorders can also cause dry mouth. Some medications, such as antihistamines, antidepressant drugs, and diuretics, can make the mouth dry as well.

Why Dry Mouth Causes Cavities

When you do not have enough saliva in your mouth, cavities will form because nothing can wash away the harmful bacteria and leftover food particles or debris. Also, saliva balances out the pH in the mouth so that teeth that have some demineralization can remineralize and stay healthy. The best remedy for dry mouth is to drink water throughout the day. It also helps to chew sugarless gum. Foods, such as dill pickles, also will stimulate the flow of saliva. Add extra liquid to foods, so they are easier to eat and swallow, and again, always drink water with your meals. You can also buy nonprescription saliva substitutes at your local pharmacy. However, before you make a purchase, you should first check with us to see if it will be necessary. In some instances, you can get rid of dry mouth by simply switching out a medication.
