The Basic Anatomy of a Tooth

Posted on 3/22/2021 by Dr. Joshi
The Basic Anatomy of a ToothWe often don't realize the importance of our teeth until we experience toothache. Your teeth help you eat, smile, and even speak.

A tooth consists of three hard tissues, namely enamel, dentin, and cementum, and a soft tissue known as pulp. Here is a breakdown of the basic anatomy of a tooth:

Enamel

Enamel is the hardest substance in the entire human body. It is the outer white layer covering your tooth and is made primarily of calcium phosphate, which is a hard mineral. Cavities first form on the enamel if plaque builds up on it.

Dentin

Dentin is that part of the tooth that is immediately beneath the enamel. It is a strong tissue and consists of microscopic tubes. If the tooth enamel gets damaged, heat or cold can make its way to these tubes and result in pain or sensitivity.

Crown

Crown is the white part of the tooth that you use to bite or chew. Its color is pearl white or yellow, depending on the thickness of the enamel, age of the individual, their oral health, and lifestyle.

Gum

This is the tender tissue that covers and shields teeth which have not yet emerged. Gums are tightly wrapped around the underlying bone, which aids in resisting the friction of food passing over them.

Cementum

Cementum is a hard tissue that connects the roots of the teeth to the gums and jawbone. A hard toothbrush may damage the cementum. Moreover, if it gets exposed to cavities due to receding gums, the surface can become rather sensitive.

Pulp

Pulp is a soft tissue that lies at the very middle of your tooth. All nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues of the tooth are located here. This is why you experience a toothache when decay penetrates to the pulp.

The crown of each tooth juts into the mouth, while the roots make their way below the gum line. If you are suffering from a toothache, schedule an appointment with us at ImplantWide by calling us at ImplantWide today.
