Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders (TMJ disorders) are disorders that cause pain in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. A temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. There are two of these – one on either side of your jaw, and they allow for movement of the jaw. Read on to learn more about TMJ disorders, including causes and symptoms you may want to look out for.
Although the exact cause of TMJ disorders is unknown, it is widely believed that trauma and injury to the jaw play a large part in it. This can range from a fall to whiplash. However, causes also include common habits such as clenching teeth because of stress, or grinding teeth during the night.
Yet more causes include physical conditions such as arthritis, autoimmune conditions, and infections, or environmental factors such as poor posture and poor diet. Misaligned teeth can also lead to TMJ disorders.
One of the main symptoms of TMJ disorders is jaw pain, especially during movement of the jaw. However, other types of pain can also be symptoms. These include headaches, earaches, neckaches, and backaches.
Sounds are also a common symptom of TMJ disorders and range from popping and clicking to grinding and grating. These may or may not be accompanied by pain.
Those suffering from TMJ disorders also often have difficulty opening and closing their mouths since locking of the jaw can occur. This can be accompanied by stiff jaw muscles and malocclusion.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, don't worry – Dr. Joshi and can definitely check your jaw for any damage. After that, they can suggest at-home treatments, lifestyle changes, and options for medical treatments. You can call ImplantWide at (630) 912-2700 to schedule an appointment.
