Tooth Extraction Schaumburg, IL

Here at ImplantWide in Schaumburg, IL we want to avoid extracting teeth if at all possible. Unfortunately, there are many circumstances where the best answer to a dental dilemma is the removal of a tooth or several teeth. Tooth extraction is the procedure that we perform to remove a tooth who stands no chance of viability in the short or long-term. Fortunately, we offer a wide range of tooth replacement options to fill in the gap left by extractions.

Reasons To Perform an Extraction

Here are a few very common reasons that teeth end up requiring removal:
•  Extreme decay
•  Severe gum disease that has lead to bone loss and tooth infection
•  Extra teeth
•  Physical trauma that cannot be repaired
•  Impacted teeth that will cause damage to other structures in the mouth
•  Overcrowding of teeth
•  To prepare for some orthodontic treatments

There is a wide range of reasons you might need to have your tooth extracted. Whenever facing tooth extraction, you should always consider tooth replacement as a missing tooth can mean serious oral health issues down the road.

The Different Kinds of Tooth Extractions

There are two different kinds of tooth extractions that are performed – simple and surgical. The most common reason for tooth extraction is wisdom teeth that are or will become impacted if left alone. All extractions are performed after the application of adequate local anesthetic as well as any sedation options you may desire. Our first goal is your comfort, so if you ever feel uncomfortable with a procedure, let us know ahead of time and we will be happy to accommodate you.

Simple Tooth Extractions

Simple tooth extractions are performed when the crown of the tooth is visible and easily accessible. A simple extraction requires no surgery or cutting tools. We use a tool called an elevator that grips the crown of the tooth. Once we gripped we will gently rock the tooth back and forth and from side to side until it becomes loose enough to pull out of your mouth. Simple extractions are commonly performed on teeth that have experienced extreme decay or physical trauma.

Surgical Tooth Extractions

When we don’t have the crown of the tooth easily accessible to us, we will need to perform a surgical extraction instead of a simple extraction. Surgical extractions require us to access the tooth by cutting into the gums. Once we have access to the tooth, we will break it up and remove the pieces one by one. The site will be cleaned and sutured closed.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

As mentioned above, wisdom teeth are the most commonly extracted teeth. Not everyone has wisdom teeth, and of those who do, not everyone needs to have them removed, but most do. Wisdom teeth usually don’t have enough room to erupt fully, and many times they come in at angles that are not correct. Leaving an impacted wisdom tooth alone can result in serious infection and multiple teeth lost. Most wisdom teeth are surgically extracted before they have a chance to become impacted.
